A rheumatologist is a doctor with specialized training in inflammatory (rheumatic) disease.

Two types of arthritis include degenerative and inflammatory arthritis. Degenerative arthritis, the more common type, is found in people over 45 years of age and occurs due to wear and tear in the joints. Inflammatory group of arthritis includes rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout, etc. Most of these affect younger people.

Diagnosis is mostly by taking a history from the patient and doing a clinical examination.  Certain imaging tests (X-rays, MRI, ultrasound), and laboratory tests such as blood markers and inflammatory indicators.

Most rheumatic diseases are chronic but can be effectively managed with medication, lifestyle changes, and therapy to control symptoms and improve quality of life.

Some rheumatology related diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, have a genetic component, but lifestyle and environmental factors also play a significant role.
