Extraction of Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth. They appear at the back of your mouth. Wisdom teeth are four in total (2 each side) usually appear between the age of 18-25 years.

Common Symptoms

Some of the common signs include

  • Tender or bleeding gums
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Jaw pain or swelling
  • Bad breath or an unpleasant taste in the mouth
  • Difficulty opening the mouth

Causes

Wisdom teeth were required by our ancestors in evolutionary era. They were helpful to eat rough food items like reed plants and sticks. But now we do not need these teeth due to our softer diets. Also, our mouth can hold 28 teeth’s comfortably but with additional four wisdom teeth, the total goes to 32 teeth which may result in overcrowding, bone and nerve damage, infection etc.

How to Prevent It

Though it is not possible to stop growing of wisdom teeth you can do certainly do a few things to avoid swelling and reduce your pain when the teeth grow.

  • Practise good oral hygiene – at least twice in a day
  • Drinking a lot of water – always keep yourself hydrated
  • Avoid sugary foods – Sugary food item can get stuck in your teeth, broken gums and thus encourages bacteria to grow
