Seizure

A seizure is when a person faces sudden and uncontrolled disturbances (electrical activity) in the brain. It can result in dramatic changes in a person's behavior, feelings, and consciousness levels. 

Types of seizure

Seizures can be categorized into 3 types:

Focal Onset Seizures: It usually occurs in a small area but can affect larger brain areas.

Generalized Onset Seizures: these happen on both sides of the brain. Some of the common types are-Tonic, Clonic, Mayoclonic, Absence, Atonic

Unknown Onset Seizures: It falls under this category when the reason is unknown medically.

 

Causes

It can be due to many health conditions like:

  • Epilepsy

  • Electric shock

  • Brain injury (during birth)

  • Brain infections such as Meningitis 

  • Brain Tumour

  • Choking

  • Substance withdrawal

  • Alcohol withdrawal

  • Stroke

  • Violent shaking

 

Symptoms

Some of the signs of seizure include:

  • Losing consciousness

  • Having uncontrolled muscle contractions

  • Biting the tongue

  • Gritting your teeth

  • Having rapid eye movement

  • Having strange taste

  • Falling

  • Dizziness

  • Change in vision

 

How to prevent it

Seizures are difficult to prevent, but following a good lifestyle can reduce risk.

  • Exercise regularly

  • Eat balanced diet

  • Reduce stress levels

  • Get enough sleep
