Bypass Surgery

Bypass surgery, also known as the open heart, is a surgery done to improve the blood flow to your heart. When the coronaries arteries which supply blood to the heart are completely blocked, or blood flow is constrained, the heart doesn't function properly. In these extreme cases, a bypass is suggested by the doctor. The surgery is recommended only after following all the other non-invasive methods like medication, lifestyle changes, Angioplasty, etc.

What is done in bypass or open-heart surgery?

The surgery is performed under anesthesia, the patient is made to sleep. An open heart is an invasive surgery wherein a cut is made to your chest. The healthy blood vessel is removed from any other part of your body (primarily the leg) to bypass the blocked artery. This procedure is known as Grafting. More blocked arteries need more Grafting.

Once the procedure is completed, bypass function is checked, and then later, the patient is shifted to ICU for monitoring.

To know more details, consult the cardiologist near you. And do not hesitate to ask any question which comes to your mind.
